Wacky Wednesday Tips: Can Openers

When was the last time you cleaned your can opener? Even if you wash it regularly, rust can make this one of the dirtiest appliances in your kitchen. But it is easy to clean both food and rust away.

  1. Fill a bowl with white or apple cider vinegar
  2. Let the can opener soak (a few hours to overnight depending on the build up of grime/rust)
  3. After soaking, scrub with an old toothbrush
  4. Rinse off the vinegar with soap and water
  5. Dry thoroughly
Done! Your can opener will be like new again!

Black Friday Tips and Shopping Etiquette

In recognition of the upcoming sales, we interrupt our Wacky Wednesday tips for some shopping information you may need this week. (article originally posted by blackfriday.com)

Surviving the Shopping Lines Outside

  • Dress warmly, but in layers so you don't overheat in the store.
  • If you can't decide where to go, call and ask if they'll be offering anything to Black Friday shoppers waiting in line. Free hot drinks or a goodie bag could be the tie-breaker you're choosing between locations.
  • Make friends with your neighbors in line - they might know about some great deals!
  • Unless you're looking to score a big-ticket item like a laptop, there's no need to be in the front of the line. Arriving an hour early or so should be plenty of time.
  • If it's a hot item you're after, call ahead and find out what time customers lined up outside last year and ask what time they suggest you arrive.
  • Electronics stores like Best Buy and Fry's tend to have the longest (and earliest) lines. For more popular items, you can often find the same deal at a store like Target but with a smaller line.
  • Every year, at least one crazed rush of shoppers makes headlines for mobbing a door when it opens. Don't be that headline; be safe and courteous to employees and other shoppers when entering the building.

Surviving the Shopping Lines Inside

  • If you can, try to get your items quickly and efficiently so that you can get in line as soon as possible. For the first few minutes of a store's opening, the registers are a breeze. After that, the lines can get so long, they sometimes wrap around the entire store - particularly at Best Buy, Toys ‘R Us, and Wal-Mart.
  • Don't hesitate to head to check out because you are choosing between items. Take them both with you and make your decision later - those few extra minutes could be the difference between a short and a long line.
  • Wait politely to check out. Do not hold places in line for other shoppers and avoid pushing up against the people in front of you.
  • Let people pass through the line when they are still shopping.

Keep It Classy, Black Friday

  • Stick to your plan and do not allow your shopping to be derailed by grumpy shoppers.
  • Shouting matches and fights over the last item often break out in stores. Remember that you do not have to participate. Just move on.
  • Be polite. Let others around you in the aisles. Help someone who is looking for an item if you happen to know where it is.
  • Be nice to employees. They're up just as early as you are. And remember - they may be the only thing between you and that last holiday "it" toy in the back.
  • It won't be possible to get every item on your list. Don't let disappointment slow you down! Get excited about the deals you successfully track down.
  • Have fun. If you're not having fun, you're not doing Black Friday right.

How to (Politely) Get What You Want

  • Make your decisions before the doors open. While everyone else is deciding which dollar DVDs they want, you can speed-walk to electronics for that flat screen TV.
  • Go to a store you know. If you're familiar with the layout, you're more likely to find items quickly. If not, visit ahead - a little research can go a long way.
  • As you go through the store, watch where you are going. You can walk quickly through the store without actually bumping into anyone.
  • For stores opening at 8:00pm on Thanksgiving, try visiting between midnight and 3am. Crowds will have died down and they may even be restocking deals.
  • Take only what you need - nobody likes the person who scoops up all of one item to turn around and sell it somewhere else.
  • If you don't see the item you are looking for, check go-back piles. Sometimes it takes a while for a product to return to the shelf after a customer changes their mind. Cash in on it!

Wacky Wednesday: Removing Lint & Hair

I am going to step outside of the box a bit for this Wacky Wednesday tip.

I have a cat, whom I love, but what I don't love white cat hair on my black pants. This little trick helps remove any hair, lint, strings, etc from the surface of your clothing.

Cleaning the surface of your clothing is a simple 1, 2, 3 when you follow Cotton-Curls tip:
  1. Put on clothing
  2. Lightly run an old disposable razor over the surface to gather the lint/hair into piles
  3. Use tape to remove the gathered lint/hair

Wacky Wednesday: Vents

Ever wonder how to get the vents in your home clean? It's actually much easier than you might think. All you need is a kitchen knife, washcloth, and your favorite cleaner.

  1. Dampen the wash cloth with your cleaner
  2. Wrap the cloth around the knife
  3. Use the knife to push the cloth in between the vents
 I love easy cleaning!

Wacky Wednesday - Black Appliances

If you have black appliances in your house, you've likely come across the issue of smudging, fingerprints, and grease. If your household is anything like mine, you've probably also tried every expensive cleaner you can imagine to clean these appliances without leaving streaks.

Well, here is our solution:
  1. Wash appliance with Dawn dish soap and water
  2. Dry off
  3. Spray with Windex and wipe down again
That's it. The Dawn dish soap cuts through any grease or oils on the appliance, but will leave light streaking behind. The Windex will remove said streaks. No hassle, no expensive products!

Wacky Wednesday: Dusting

For years, I thought I was the only one who dusts using a sock. I recently found out, this isn't the case! Today's tip shows how to get caked on dust off blinds, shelves, etc.

The process is simple:
  1. Mix equal parts warm water and vinegar in a bowl
  2. Use the sock to wipe up the dust
  3. When the sock gets dirty, rinse in the bowl and repeat

Wacky Wednesday Tip - Shower heads

Take a long look at your shower head. Does water still come out all the holes? Does it look clean and attractive? If not, it's definitely time to spruce it up!

  1. Pour distilled white vinegar into a plastic bag
  2. Secure the bag around the shower head using a rubber band
  3. Let sit 1 hour
  4. Wipe clean with a wet cloth
That's it! You can even dip a sponge in the left over vinegar and use it to shine up the other fixtures in the bathroom.

Wacky Wednesday - Window Washing

Do you always have streaks on your windows or mirrors after you clean them? Then this tip is for you!

Spray your window/mirror with your chosen mirror and wipe it down with a rag, just as you always would. Once the window/mirror has been washed, ball up a page out of a newspaper and buff the streaks right off the surface using the paper.

Newspaper works best for this. Magazine paper doesn't do the trick, though printer paper will work in a pinch.

This tip comes straight out of my own childhood. Thanks, Mom!

Wacky Wednesday Tips: Scratched Wood

The problem with wood furniture is that it tends to get scratched easily, and those scratches really show. We've heard all sorts of tips on how to fix scratches, but this one is our favorite so far!

Method:
  • 1/2 Cup Vinegar
  • 1/2 Cup Olive Oil
Mix the ingredients in a bowl and use a rag dipped in the mixture to polish the wood. Keep going until you have polished the full surface. The scratches will still be there, but should be far less apparent.

This may require repetition on a regular basis to keep the scratches from returning.

Wacky Wednesday - Burners

The stove top tends to be the focus when cleaning your own stove, while the burners are left covered in grease. Cooking causes the oils and grease to cook onto the burner, making it seemingly impossible to remove. It doesn't need to be difficult though, just follow these steps!
  1. Take 1/4 cup of ammonia
  2. Seal one burner and the ammonia up in a large zip lock bag
  3. Let sit overnight (you may want to place this on a cookie sheet in case of leaking)
  4. Wipe down with a clean sponge
That's it. It's the ammonia fumes that dissolves all the grease and cooked on oils.  No scrubbing or soaking is necessary.

Wacky Wednesday - Hard Water Removal

We all suffer from hard water deposits around our sinks, but getting rid of them is far easier than you might expect. The secret? Vinegar.

Soak paper towels in vinegar and wrap them around any area with hard water deposits. Let sit for 20 minutes and the hard water should come off with a light scrub. If the hard water is particularly thick, you may want to let the vinegar sit for an hour (you may need to rewet the towels with vinegar periodically).

Wacky Wednesday - Shopvac Cleaning

If you have a reasonable amount of electronics, then chances are high that you've spend an unreasonable amount of money on cans of compressed air to blow them clean. Did you know that there is a better way that is virtually free?

The handy tip below will help clean dust from any electronic crevice and would even help get the little nooks in the car too!
